Santa Cruz sidewalks

Dear Council Members,

Thank you for considering the next steps in plans for the Santa Cruz
sidewalks. This will be a valuable safety improvement for our children and
residents of all ages. I strongly urge you to move forward with the
sidewalks, but have some concerns and questions about the specific
proposal.

Council had directed staff to seek solutions that would preserve the
attractive shrubs and furniture that residents had installed within the
city right of way.

However, the result of the investigation is that for technical reasons, it
would require an additional $3-$5 million to address grading and drainage
issues that would allow them to preserve all of the shrubs and furniture
that residents have installed within the city right of way.

$3 to $5 million would pay for 10 miles of protected bike lanes or a
notable fraction of a pedestrian bridge or tunnel crossing a barrier.

As someone who has been watching the very gradual progress of the city's
pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, I would support a higher relative
priority on safety in using the city's financial resources.

Lastly, there is a proposal to retain parking on Santa Cruz between Fremont
and University. This is an area with very narrow sidewalks and high
pedestrian and bike use. I would urge you to continue the project in this
block segment.
