Re: Safer crosswalk at Middle and Blake

Hi Ms. Mack, Ms. Rowen, and Mr. DeMoss,

Thank you for your feedback for the crosswalk at Middle/Blake. In December, the Transportation Division submitted a request to add striping, new signs, and a "yield to pedestrians" sign along the center line; the signs are on order. We expect the work to be completed as soon as the signs come in. A similar improvement will be implemented for the crosswalk at San Mateo/Middle as well.

Staff is also working on developing potential concepts for Middle for improved bike facilities and other safety improvements as they would align with the potential undercrossing near the 500 El Camino Real<x-apple-data-detectors://3> site. Those will take more time to build consensus around potential modifications, but our team begun those efforts last fall to complete a project initiated by the Council in 2008 that was not implemented at that time.

Please let me know if you have further questions or would like to discuss.

Hello Mayor Cline and members of City Council,

I'm writing with concerns about safety at the intersection of Blake St and Middle Ave. I often walk to the Park from my home on College Avenue to Nealon Park and use the crosswalk located there. Unfortunately, most of the time traffic doesn't stop unless I'm well into the street. Even then, there are time when cars go speeding by. With sundown happening earlier in the day, I'm often out walking with my son (9 months) when it is dark and there is poor lighting and no blinking crosswalk signs at the location. When I lived on Hoover Street there was a blinking crosswalk installed across Valparaiso. I know that this intersection is used much more frequently than the one at Valparaiso and Hoover Street.

I would love to see a new crosswalk with lighting installed at Blake St on Middle Ave. To underscore the urgency of this request, a neighbor of mine was nearly hit by a car while walking across the street with her toddler because a speeding car failed to stop (and tried to illegally pass the car ahead of them who was properly stopped and waiting for her to cross).

I appreciate your time and attention to this! I truly believe this could prevent a tragedy.
