City Council Agenda Item G-1 "El Camino Real/Downtown Specific Plan" Biennial Review

Mayor Carlton and members of the City Council:

On behalf of Stanford University's Middle Plaza at 500 El Camino Real" project, I wanted to specifically comment on one area contained within the staff recommendations for the "El Camino Real/Downtown Specific Plan biennial review.

Our " Middle Plaza at 500 El Camino Real" project has an extended frontage along El Camino. Along that frontage, our future project will have residential, commercial office and retail uses, in addition to a series of plazas and courtyards. As part of our redesign of our project, we have concentrated on providing a great deal of massing and articulation into the project design, especially at the pedestrian level along El Camino Real. The integration of project signage is yet another important part of the overall design of a project.

On page 44 of the staff report (Staff Report #: 15 -176 - CC), staff is recommending that "the Specific Plan and/or Zoning Ordinance be modified to allow larger Specific Plan parcels to apply for signage relief as part of their architectural control review. This would allow the specific signage proposal to be considered comprehensively along with the building, to ensure that the sign area is compatible with the overall proposal, its particular lot frontage, and the surrounding context."

We believe this is the correct approach in dealing with project signage, and such a change allows for a more "all-inclusive" design review of highly visible projects along the El Camino Real corridor. Therefore, we support this staff recommendation as proposed.
