east/west bike route

Dear Council Members: I am so delighted that there are TWO great plans for bike routes across Menlo Park. The big plus for the bike commission plan is routing bikes through Oak Grove to cross El Camino (thus avoiding Ravenswood with all its complications).

However, I think that is also the weakpoint of the plan. We really need to serve MA High students along that corridor. Having raised one myself, I doubt that students will bike two blocks to get on a bike path. Remember that they believe they are immortal and take all sorts of risks at this age.)

For the sake of the students, I am going with the double bike lanes on Ravenswood with the dog-leg through the Civic Center. I can just imagine that the students will ride en masse down both of the lanes all in one direction. (This will prevent other bikers from going in the opposite direction at that time of day — but I think we bikers will quickly learn to avoid being there at the time school gets out.)

THANK YOU SO MUCH for your careful evaluation of both plans. - Susan Bryan
