For bike lanes on El Camino Real in Menlo Park

Dear Honorable Mayor Carlton and Menlo Park City Council Members:

I am writing to support the addition of protected bike lanes on El Camino Real in Menlo Park.

I chose my house in Menlo Park because it is close to the downtown, where it is easy to buy groceries, pick up dry cleaning, or enjoy a meal without a car. Adding protected bike lanes on El Camino gives people more choices to get to downtown Menlo Park easily and safely. In this way, bike lanes on El Camino can help sustain a thriving neighborhood business district like downtown Menlo Park.

Adding protected bike lanes on El Camino Real would help to prevent collisions and create a safer roadway for people walking, biking, taking transit, and driving. The Federal Highway Administration, in a review of dozens of road diets, found that measures such as adding protected bike lanes reduced vehicle collisions by about 25% in five Bay Area cities and Sacramento.

Adding a third traffic lane would induce traffic demand. This means more cars and more travel delays. It also increases air pollution and can contribute to diminishing health and quality of life for resident.s

Menlo Park is fortunate enough to have a Caltrain station just steps from its downtown. The city should invest in land uses that support transit ridership and in creating places and streets that are designed to help people get around by any mode.

We urge you to think of the current and future needs of this community and set the example for the rest of the Peninsula, by choosing safety and accessibility for all people and adding protected bike lanes to El Camino Real. With Menlo Park’s Planning, Bike and Transportation Commissions all voting for bike lanes and the positive public survey results, the choice should be easy.

Thank you,

Laura Kahn
