We are all aware of the perpetual traffic congestion on El Camino, primarily due to the reduction of through-traffic lanes from three to two for a few blocks in Menlo Park (this happened in 1985!).
Next Tuesday, 8/25, the City Council will decide whether to fix the problem by restoring the configuration back to three through-traffic lanes in each direction, or remove all on-street parking and adding bike lanes.
This is a rare opportunity to let Council know how you feel about the issue, but please do it ASAP (before Tuesday)! Their email address is city.council_at_(domainremoved)
Here's more info:
For many years, and many Councils, fixing the El Camino traffic bottleneck has always been resisted because "we can't afford to lose the parking spaces."
Now, with El Camino parking removal on the table, we have the chance to choose between bike lanes and more car lanes. We can eliminate the El Camino traffic bottleneck in Menlo Park by removing street parking and reconfiguring for three lanes of through-traffic in both directions. Creating a bottleneck by configuring only two lanes for through-traffic for a few blocks in 1985 was a mistake then, and perpetuating it now would also be a serious mistake.
