Re: [willows_neighborhood] Fw: Laurel School Upper Campus Construction Update

Alex,

I'm concerned about this tree situation, as below. Please clarify the process for me re heritage trees on school property. Do they go through the usual city process that includes the EQC review, or does the school board have the sole decision when it comes to heritage trees on their campus?

Many thanks,

Catherine

With less than a week’s notice you are going to substantially alter the tree canopy which is an integral part of the immediate neighborhood’s landscape.

I sincerely hope the School District and City of Menlo Park will reconsider this decision and allow for appropriate public comment before the chain saws go into action.

> Dear Laurel School Upper Campus Neighbors,

> I am writing this e-mail to provide you an update of the construction project at 275 Elliott Drive. As you are aware the tree removal and site clearing work has begun. The work will resume on Monday after the 4th of July holiday and be completed by the end of next week. After the site has been cleared, the contractor will begin work with the building foundation preparation and site utilities.

> I am also writing this letter to inform our neighbors that after a lengthy review process and consideration, the District has determined to remove the large oak tree along the school border and 420-424 French Court. The District has consulted with several arborist and concluded that the risk to property and life is too great to maintain this tree. In light of recent tree collapses in the area during the last winter, the District believes that removal of this tree is most prudent and safe. This decision was very agonizing and difficult but the safety of the public and students always takes precedent. The tree is scheduled for removal next week.
