Santa Cruz Avenue Sidewalks

Dear City Council Members:

I read with interest the email sent to you by Patti Fry dated June 17, 2015, and share her questions and concerns. Will there be a written response to the questions in her email?

I am most interested in the safety concerns. I just learned that our neighbor Teresa was hit (but not seriously injured) by a bicycle while walking on Santa Cruz Avenue on Sunday. I have been brushed back twice in the last week by cyclists riding four abreast in the expanded bike lane (and each time while I was walking in the gutter).

To address safety concerns in the short term before someone is seriously injured, would the Council consider limiting the width of the bike lane to four feet (not counting the new “buffer lane” between the car traffic and the bike lane)? This is apparently the recommended minimum width for bike lanes when there is no adjacent parking. If you add a white line to mark the right side boundary of the bike lane, you may mitigate the pedestrian safety hazard created by the new design. Bicyclists will have plenty of room to ride single file.

Thank you for your consideration.
