Hi Ms. Nash,

Thank you for your email.

My sincere apologies for the confusion. In my prior message I neglected to specify that the on-street parking would remain on the south side of Santa Cruz Avenue as you indicated, which is based on the Council direction from the March 12, 2015 meeting. I apologize for the oversight. I’m cc’ing Ms. Ambuhl also since this clarifies the response to her prior question.

Dear Council Members, City Manager McIntyre, and Transportation Manager Nagaya,

The City has recently produced conflicting information about the Santa Cruz Avenue (SCA) sidewalks project, causing confusion that should be cleared up.

On March 10, 2015, the City Council approved a preferred alternative plan that removes SCA parking between Johnson and Olive on both sides of the street (in order to install sidewalks) with the mandate to “explore leaving parking on the south side between Fremont Park and Fremont Street or potentially Arbor.”

The City's SCA Sidewalks page, and Nikki Nagaya's email today to a resident both indicate that parking remains on both sides of SCA between Johnson and Arbor. “The approved plan for sidewalk installation on Santa Cruz Avenue includes on-street parking removal west of Arbor Street to Hillview School (Olive Street). On-street parking will remain between Johnston and Arbor. Based on staff observations, we concur that there is current demand for on-street parking between Johnston and Arbor, thus no changes to parking are proposed at this time in this area.”

The City mailed out postcards this month that state: “On March 12, 2015 [sic], the City Council selected a preferred alternative for sidewalk installation on Santa Cruz Avenue, including removal of on-street parking between Johnson Street and Olive Street on the north side and between Olive Street and Fremont Street on the south side.”

These City staff positions differ pretty dramatically from what the Council decided, and it seems like everyone should get on the same page about this.

Thank you,
Betsy Nash
