I am at La Entrada School field nearly every day. Some attention needs to
be directed at the sprinklers in order to save money and water, and make the
process better for the field. Some of the sprinklers water the bus yard, some
drench the dry sandy hill by the bus parking. Many of the sprinklers
repeat their cycle 2 or three times in certain locations on the field and other
locations get no water. The watering seems to occur in the afternoon at the
height of the sunshine. This means that a lot of water is lost to evaporation
and the fact that it is done prior to the kids lacrosse, soccer, or whatever
means that the kids, by playing on the wet grass, destroy it. Afternoon
watering also entices the kids to frolick in the water which can lead to more
damage to the lawn and the sprinkler heads. I have been told that the kids
vandalize the sprinkler heads. However, the obvious waste that is going on
distresses me. If this is the pattern throughout the city you must be losing a
lot of money. I hope that you will look into this problem at La Entrada and
any other location where sprinklers are used. Janet Davis, Alpine Road, Menlo
Park.
