Re: San Francisco 2020 by Barbara Tannenbaum - February
2007 issue

Hon. Mayor and councilmen, et al

Scrolling down to "getting around" the author points out that the high
speed train connecting the city to Los Angeles and. Sacramento will
allow those who fled to the central valley or beyond San Jose to come
back to work or shop and leave their cars behind... if the voters
approve a new bond measure in two years, construction of the bullet
train could begin in 2010.. In this article quoting Ellen Ullman,
computer programmer turned author (Close to the machine, the bug) "Women
at night might need a car" So might seniors and the disabled, and all
of us on a windy, rainy night says Tannenbaum.

These are my thoughts frequently expressed. When my granddaughter
visited we took a no-car trip to San Francisco. Returning after dark,
she was afraid to walk down from the train station past Burgess Park.
We had to arrange for someone to drive us.

Many plans for no garages or limited car spaces will not work I recall
an impassioned plea from a mother before the Menlo Park council to lift
the restricted on street parking because her daughter had to walk a
block in the dark.

Our cars will always be our safe haven - our shelter from the elements
and dangers lurking everywhere.

Is it too early to be planning for connectivity to public transit with
frequent shuttles, call-a-ride and cabs door-to- door?
