A recent post suggests that electric-powered trains are not
environmentally friendly compared to diesel because over 50% of electric
power is generated by coal. This may be true nationwide, but it is not
true in California.
According to this report from the California Energy Commission,
California derives only 15.7% of its power from coal. As for the rest,
41.5% is derived from natural gas, 29.9% from hydro and renewables, and
12.9% from nuclear. Going forward, the combination of renewable
targets, and the ban on purchase of out of state coal, it does not
appear as though the percentage of power from coal is set to increase.
Dirty coal power does not appear to be a good reason to oppose electric
trains.
