Encinal is wrong place for adult field

Dear City Council -

I and other Felton Gables residents will be attending the council meeting tonight to express our concerns about the proposed adult soccer field at Encinal Elementary School.

Below is the text from my Letter to the Editor in the Menlo Park Almanac, printed on April 3.

On April 3, the Menlo Park City Council is set to approve funding for a proposed U19 ("adult-sized") artificial turf soccer field at Encinal Elementary School.

This is the wrong place for this field. An elementary school playfield should be reserved for elementary school age children's activities. Promoting activities here for adults and much older youth is inappropriate and not in the best interest of the kindergarten through 5th grade students who will be attending Encinal Elementary School. We encourage continuing after-school sports activities for younger children at the Encinal Elementary School site, but mixing elementary school students with adults on the same field is not the answer.

We urge you to state your views at the April 3 City Council meeting or by writing to the City Council at www.city.council@menlopark.org.
