Dear Council members,
I am a new Menlo Park resident, having just moved from Palo Alto. I work
at Stanford with a climate expert. In this capacity, I process numerous
requests for more information on climate change and its impacts. As you
know, climate change is a grave and unprecedented challenge for humans
and our life support system; one that, according to the recently
released Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report, we have
helped to create. To prepare for the effects of climate change and
reduce our harmful practices in order to prevent further adverse
impacts, we must act now.
I strongly urge you to adopt climate change initatives that will empower
and enable Menlo Park to respond to this challenge in a responsible,
exemplary way. Please sign the Mayor's Climate Protection Agreement, and
establish a community-based Green Ribbon Task Force to investigate the
most effective actions for Menlo Park to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions. Such measures will not only help reduce adverse impacts to
the environment, but also safeguard our children from asthma and other
ailments.
I look forward to your decisive action to support climate change
initiatives in Menlo Park.
Sincerely,
Marilyn Cornelius
