After School Care at Burgess

Dear City Council,

I am writing to express my disappointment and to
also urge you to act. This morning I went to
Burgess Children's Center at 6am to wait 1.5
hours (office opens at 7:30am), hoping to
pre-register my child for after-school care
(Kindergarten) for 2007-08 school year. I called
ahead and Adela (Manager) told me that there were
only 7 spots available. I asked when we should
arrive, and she just suggested that earlier is
better, as there were plenty of parents calling
her. When I arrived at 6am, there were already 9
other parents there, 2 of which slept overnight
and all others had arrived at 5am. The doors
opened promptly at 7:30, and there were only 6
spots available! I feel this is quite outrageous
that a program provided to serve the entire City
has only 25 spots available, 19 of which are
filled through the preschool graduates and
existing siblings. If I remember, the previous
Council wanted to outsource this program because
there wasn't enough interest. I don't see how
this is possible! I urge the Council to act by
increasing Staff to accomodate the needs of the
City's families. Our older son went through MCC
and Burgess and had a great experience. We want
the same for all of our children (2 more to come
through). Please help our City serve it's
people.

Regards,

Greg Fujii
