        Dear Council Members:

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) will host
a Water Utility Climate Change Summit January 31 - February 1 at the
Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. This Summit will bring
together a select group of utility managers, government leaders, and
technical experts from throughout the United States for a working,
interactive session focused on the responses water managers are
considering -- and should consider -- to global warming. I am writing to
invite you to attend the SFPUC's Water Utility Climate Change Summit.
Because of your leadership role on climate change issues and in the
water industry your participation will strengthen the Summit and I hope
you will be able to attend.

As you know, water utilities in the West and nationwide are at
the forefront of considering future impacts of climate change. Many
agencies, including the SFPUC, are already modeling potential
operational impacts resulting from projected changes in precipitation,
snowmelt runoff, and sea level rise. In some cases, utilities are
altering plans and policies. We cannot afford to sit on the sidelines on
this critical issue.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom will kick off the Summit.
Confirmed panelists include Emily Lloyd of New York DEP, Lester Snow
from California DWR, Chuck Clarke from Seattle Public Utilities, Maureen
Stapleton from San Diego County Water Authority, Peter Gleick from
Pacific Institute, and Dan Cayan from Scripps Institution of
Oceanography. I've enclosed a preliminary Summit schedule.

Please return the enclosed RSVP Form by fax at 415-554-3161 or
email the completed form to ClimateChange@sfwater.org by January 24,
2007 at 5:00 p.m. to let us know if you can attend and reserve your
space(s). For more information about the Climate Change Summit, call
415-554-3289.

Thank you for your consideration. I hope you will be able to
participate in this collective effort to tackle the specific challenges
that water utilities will face from rising seas, reduced snowpack and
other potential climate change impacts.

        Sincerely,

        Susan Leal
General Manager
